1990 - Held at Eagle Hills Golf Course. First Place, Jerry Hecker (‘69), Dr. Steve Bruce (‘68), Dr. Bruce Morrison and Dr. Austin Cushman, who was helped greatly by his able caddy and devoted son, Ben (‘95). Second Place, Tom Smith, Mark Gordon, Mike Thompson, and Mike Mitchell, all from the class of 1972.
This tournament's forerunner was the Puckett-Tiller Golf Classic 1979-1988. Rare, collector item t-shirts from the 1984 Puckett-Tiller Golf Classic (Iwo Jima design) in mint condition are still available for purchase for $100.
1991 golf tournament winners were disqualified for too many players. Mike Dingel, Bryan Dingel, Allyn Dingel, Brent Chaffield, John "Blade" Skinner, and a heretofore unidentified sixth individual. When tournament officials realized that this "foursome" had too many players, they were disqualified as the official champions.
Second Place, Mike Thompson, Mark Gordon, and Mike Mitchell, and Tom Smith, all from the class of 1972, were named official champions (picture on page one). For their efforts they tournament winners received the dubious prize of organizing next year's golf event.
1992 - Held at Eagle Hills Golf Course in lovely Eagle, Idaho. First Place, Don Gettle, Larry Jones, Sam Coil and Gary Bettis with a score of ten under par. The Brady brothers-John (‘75), Mike (‘76), Pat (‘69), Nick (‘81) and Tim (‘79, who was recovering from ACL reconstruction after a freak bowling accident) was also ten under par but was disqualified for having too many players. Third Place three-way tie between the Class of '72 team Mark Gordon, Mike Thompson, Mike Mitchell and Tom Smith; the team of Austin Cushman, Jim Carlson, Brian Ballard (‘68) and Neil McCarthy; and the Skinner boys, Gard, Steve, Rick and Dave.
1993 - Held at Plantation Golf Course. First Place, the Troy family, Ron (’79), Jerry (‘78, the third greatest golfer in Bishop Kelly behind Dave Molitor and Fr. James Wilson), and their parents Tom and Carol Troy.
1994 - Held at Quail Hollow Golf Course. First Place, Skinner boys, consisting of Gard Skinner, Sr., Gard Skinner,Jr., Steve Skinner, Rick Skinner (‘66), and Dave Skinner (‘71). Since Dave had been president of the Alumni Association for five years, his team is allowed an extra player during scramble events, thus insuring victory. Third place went to the team of Greg Goodson (‘71), Phil Goodson (disguised as Charles Manson), Ron Heffner, and Tim Heffner (‘86).
Highlights of the tournament included Mike McEntee's 326-yard drive to win the long- ball contest. Max Sheils, the only golfer ever to sweep every invitational tournament during the summer of 1993, played in the event for the first time and stunned the field with his constant play and unorthodox swing. Dr. David Lachiondo, 25 pounds lighter after a three week walking tour through the Basque Country last summer, also participated, but failed to make a shot worth mentioning.
1995 - Held at Quail Hollow Golf Course. First Place, 5-Time State Amateur Champion Dave Molitor (‘71), Chris Bieter (‘74), Curt Barbee (‘74) and Kim Johnstone (‘74) to win the tournament with an impressive 12 under par. Second place for the sixth consecutive year went to that tough team from the class of ‘72 Mark Gordon, Tom Smith, Mike Mitchell and some other guy they picked up because Mike Thompson couldn’t make it. Third place, went to the team of Jon Skinner (‘84), Mike Dingel, Brian Dangel and Sheep Dingel. Free Alumknight refrigerator magnets given to all participants!

The 14th Annual Father Russell Charity Golf Scramble wil be held at Warm Springs Golf Course on May 20th this year. Our recipient has been chosen, he is a junior at Bishop Kelly who discovered cancer earlier this year. We are looking for new sponsors! Are you willing to help? Call Mike Russell at 343-8568 if you would like to help out or get more information. Unfortunately, the tournament is full -so we cannot send out any more registration packets - but we would love any and all support we can get to help a family in desparate need right now!
I was just scanning the web site and found this message board. I am a 1999 graduate and an avid golfer. I am curious as to when the tournament is. Reason being, is that if it were in the summer I would love to play. I know that many graduates from BK who play golf but are still in high school would like to play but may be unable to. Again, I am unaware of the dates of the tournament but my recolection is that it is not in the middle of summer. Has this ever been addressed and is there any possibility for change?
